Sapo Ledgend of Lake Titicaca

The game of sapo is based on a Inca legend. This legend states how the Inca King would travel to Lake Titicaca to gain the favor of of the frogs by throwing pieces of gold into the lake.  The Inca’s believed that frogs also know as “El Sapo” had  mystic powers and if they caught these gold pieces they would grant any wish to this person at the same time turning gold, much like the coin it caught.

So to honor this tradition the King built a golden statue of El Sapo in the gardens of his palace an allow the all those who want to have the same future passed onto them toss coins to this frog within the garden.

In modern time this game has been passed down from generation to generation taking on the form of the designs below.
